Air Serbia and Menzies Aviation employ first all-electric aircraft turnaround
In the first of its kind for environmental responsibility, Air Serbia, in partnership with Menzies Aviation, has achieved a historic milestone: the first all-electric aircraft turnaround. This groundbreaking endeavor signals a paradigm shift in the aviation industry’s approach to sustainability.
By utilising specialised electric vehicles for crucial turnaround tasks such as aircraft pushback, baggage transport, and other ground operations, this initiative significantly reduces the carbon footprint of domestic aviation. The shift away from traditional fossil fuel-powered ground equipment not only minimises greenhouse gas emissions but also demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to achieving greener, more sustainable aviation practices.
This collaboration between Air Serbia and Menzies Aviation sets a powerful example for the aviation sector, highlighting the potential of electric technology to reduce environmental impact without compromising efficiency or operational capabilities. With this historic achievement, both companies are leading the charge toward a cleaner, more sustainable future for air travel.
Jiri Marek, CEO of Air Serbia, commented on the airline’s unwavering commitment to sustainability practices.
“We are extremely pleased with the successful implementation of the first all-electric turnaround at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, achieved in collaboration with Menzies Aviation. This initiative represents a step towards reducing our carbon footprint. Air Serbia continuously strives for socially responsible business practices, and today’s milestone confirms our dedication in that regard. We look forward to future cooperation and, together with Menzies, we will strive to have a positive impact on the entire community,” he said.
Marek’s statement reflects Air Serbia's ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into its operations, demonstrating the airline's role as a leader in adopting environmentally conscious solutions in the aviation industry.
The future for Air Serbia
The collaboration between Air Serbia and Menzies Aviation, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding in October 2023, underscores a shared vision for enhancing service quality and passenger experience at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. This partnership not only aims to improve operational efficiency but also emphasizes a commitment to sustainability and innovation in the aviation industry.
With Menzies Aviation’s extensive expertise in aircraft handling services, passenger and baggage check-in, as well as boarding procedures, combined with Air Serbia’s dedication to excellence, the partnership is poised to deliver enhanced services to travelers. Furthermore, this collaboration highlights the airlines’ joint efforts to drive sustainable practices, as seen in their recent achievement of the all-electric aircraft turnaround.
As Menzies Aviation continues to handle critical ground services at Belgrade, this strategic alliance promises to further elevate the standards of service while advancing eco-friendly innovations, making a significant contribution to both operational and environmental goals in the aviation sector.
